NYT Reporter Caught “Backtracking” On Wiretapping Claims

New York Times reporter Michael S. Schmidt has been accused of backtracking on claims that President Donald Trump had been wiretapped during the campaign.

In January, Schmidt authored an article titled “Wiretapped Data Used In Inquiry of Trump Aides.”

The very first paragraph of the article (hosted online under a different title here) reads:

American law enforcement and intelligence agencies are examining intercepted communications and financial transactions as part of a broad investigation into possible links between Russian officials and associates of President-elect Donald J. Trump.

The article also quotes an anonymous source who says “wiretapped communications had been provided to [Obama’s] White House.”

Two days ago, Schmidt co-authored an article titled “Trump, Offering No Evidence, Says Obama Tapped His Phones.”

The article reads:

The president’s decision on Saturday to lend the power of his office to accusations against his predecessor of politically motivated wiretapping – without offering any proof – was remarkable, even for a leader who has repeatedly shown himself willing to make assertions that are false or based on dubious sources.

These Twitter users are blasting the New York Times for this apparent manipulation.

This Schmidt guy needs a visit to Room 101 for screwing this up. The Party is infallible!

How can they rewrite history if the proof hasn’t been destroyed first?

So the NYT even reported on it a while back, and now they want to help push the false narrative that Trump is making it all up.

Oh dear. Their Chinese click bots will probably be upset about being lied to, and that’s over half of their web traffic! I wonder, are they going to retract the previous stories, issue corrections, or just whistle past the MSM graveyard? Is there any doubt?

Whatever fits best in an article against Trump. Facts do not matter anymore. Sad. I couldn’t do a job like this. Couldn’t go home to my family and pretend to be a hard working and relevant person that helps the society.

So, it looks like Trump’s “dubious source” was the New York Times.
