A North Carolina high school teacher has been accused of engaging in sexual activity with a teenage student.
The Cherokee County Sheriff’s office confirmed that Kayla Sprinkles, 26, was arrested earlier this month and has been handed a five count felony indictment from a grand jury for sexual activity with a student.
Sprinkles was new on staff at Andrews High School and authorities say the relationship with the student carried on between December 2016 and April 2017.
Upon hearing of the indictment on social media, Sprinkles went on the lam. She fled the county but eventually turned herself in to the Mecklenburg County Detention Center on June 7, where she was released on $25,000 bond, reports the New York Post.
Authorities got a tip in late March that Sprinkles had engaged in sex with a student in the Cherokee County school system. They began to interview students before ultimately nabbing the naughty teacher.
Cherokee County Sheriff Derrick Palmer told reporters, “Our youth and our students are one of the greatest resources that Cherokee County is blessed to have,” he said. “It is incumbent upon all of us to ensure their safety and wellbeing as they grow and mature.”
Sprinkles has not yet entered a plea and is expected to appear in Cherokee County Superior Court on July 2.
