MSNBC’s Joy Reid is being accused by former colleagues of creating a “toxic” work environment, threatening co-workers with physical violence, and peddling homophobia.
During Reid’s time as co-host and producer of “Wake Up South Florida,” a radio show on station WTPS 1080 AM, her former cohost described MSNBC’s “AM Joy” star as being “one evil woman.”
Speaking exclusively to Fox News, Andre Eggelletion, after being silent for more than a decade, said Reid created “the most toxic work environment I’ve ever experienced” and even threatened him with violence.
“It was a very unhealthy work environment because of her attitude. She attacked me on a constant basis while I was there. I was even once threatened with physical violence during a break with her,” he told Fox News.
The behavior and threat of violence was confirmed by then-national program director for Syndication One, which owned WTPS, Lee Michaels.
“It absolutely happened — 100 percent,” he revealed to Fox News, adding he had to convince Eggelletion not to quit over Reid’s conduct.
“There was a dispute over it and I told her, ‘Go ahead and call the manager’,” Eggelletion said after Reid, his subordinate, refused to cover a story suggested by him.
Reid allegedly replied, “If you ever speak to me like that again I’m coming over there and it’s gonna be me and you.”
Eggelletion also alleged Reid made homophobic remarks about then-Florida Governor Charlie Crist, claiming on air that the Republican was gay and referring to him as “Miss Charlie,” which echos statements Reid made in her bizarre blog posts from that time. Those posts have also been found to contain conspiracy theories about 9/11 and hateful comments about Jews.
After the confrontation with Reid, higher ups in the station were called in to mediate the conflict, which Michaels says caused Reid to double-down on her insubordination, once allegedly telling the general manager that “Y’all want me to be his friend. I don’t want to be his motherfucking friend,” referring to Eggelletion.
In December, a batch of old blog posts from Reid was dumped on social media forcing Reid to apologize to LGBTs for “tone-deaf and dumb” comments about Govenor Crist. Then in April, more posts were revealed, and Reid lied saying she believed maybe her old account had been hacked.
After Reid admitted to lying, she issued a statement saying, “I genuinely believe I did not write those hateful things because they are completely alien to me. But I can definitely understand based on things I have tweeted and have written in the past why some people don’t believe me.”
Eggelletion and Michaels aren’t so convinced.
“She said she doesn’t know who that person is – I find it very hard to believe. Very hard to believe based on my experience with her. Based on her attitudes towards me to this day. I never ever did anything at all to disrespect her, hurt her, I’ve never written or gone public in the last ten years with anything negative about her,” Eggelletion told Fox News.
Michaels said Reid often referred to her old blog on the show.
“Her demeanor inside the radio station complemented what was on the blog. Mean-spirited, very edgy, negative personality in her writing,” he said.
