Count Dankula Sticks It to Detractors, Donates ‘Gross Offense’ Fine to Children’s Hospital

Markus Meechan, the YouTube comedian better known as Count Dankula, has donated £800 to Glasgow Children’s Hospital in his open refusal to pay his fine for “grossly offensive” speech.

Meechan is crowdfunding his appeal effort with the aid of the public, which has donated close to £160,000 to help him overturn his conviction over a YouTube video where he trained his girlfriend’s pug to give the Nazi salute to mock the ideology. He vows to fight against the court’s decision, which he rightfully calls out as an affront to the freedom of speech.

“Oh dear, I went to pay my fine and my finger must have slipped,” tweeted the Scotsman. “Silly me.”

Meechan has urged his followers to also share their donations with the Children’s Hospital. He has stated that any remainder of the funds he receives for his appeal will also go to charity.

As highlighted by writer Jack Montgomery on Breitbart, Meechan regularly mocks proponents of the so-called “alt-right,” and defines himself as a “center-left libertarian.”

Meechan enjoys popular public support from other likeminded comedians, including Ricky Gervais; Jewish comedian David Baddiel; and Tom Walker, who is best known for his role as the Brass Eye-inspired satirical journalist “Jonathan Pie.”

One of Meechan’s loudest detractors, The IT Crowd creator Graham Linehan, continues to pursue an aggressive stance against the Scotsman, referring to him as someone with an “alt-right background and association with fascists and right-wing conspiracy mongers” in an article he recently published for Radio Times.

Linehan, who is no stranger to controversial humor, as exhibited by his writing for Father Ted and The IT Crowd, tries to defend his own work as “transgressive” while attacking other comedians for making the same jokes.
