Nate Silver’s FiveThirtyEight blog, a statistics-driven journalism experiment, is getting the axe from corporate daddy ESPN.
Silver announced this week he was once again being hurled around the room in a game of hot potato as mainstream news struggles to come up with a purpose for the floundering twink who once gave them such pleasure.
FiveThirtyEight, no longer a Spring chicken, will now be crashing on the sofa of ABC News, which acquired the blog for an undisclosed sum. Founded in 2008 as a source of election polling aggregation, FiveThirtyEight rapidly expanded into sports, politics, and economics. In 2010, the site was moved to The New York Times, only to run into the arms of ESPN three years later.
In 2016, Silver gave overwhelming odds to a Hillary Clinton victory in the general election. His staff of data experts also failed to predict Donald Trump would receive the nomination from the Republican Party.
“I’m glad we didn’t predict something as crazy as a Trump nomination,” Silver told Variety in an interview from 2016, labeling the future president a “demagogue.”
At ABC, Silver and his staff will be incorporated into the news division and are expected to make appearances across all platforms of ABC News.
In a statement, James Goldston, president of ABC News, which is owned by Disney, said, “With political news front and center every day and the 2018 midterms on the horizon, Nate Silver and his brilliant team truly enhance what we can offer our audience.”
