President Trump’s campaign manager, Brad Parscale, is calling on Facebook to appoint an ideologically diverse panel of moderators to assess the company’s censorship policies.
Posting on Twitter, Parscale, who leads the President’s bid for re-election in 2020, called on Zuckerberg and his team to be transparent about who it chooses to ban, and why.
“If @facebook really cares about not looking like a censor,” wrote Parscale on Twitter. “They should post all blocked and banned posts/users in a special area that is viewable by a select group of diverse Americans. Right, left, and all types of social groups. Transparency!”
Parscale’s comments follow Zuckerberg’s testimony before the Senate last week, where he was grilled for several hours about the company’s commitment to free speech, among other issues.
“We consider ourselves to be a platform for all ideas,” said Zuckerberg. His claim ran contrary to the company’s decision to suspend several popular pages, including one run by Diamond and Silk, a pair of African-American Trump supporters.
Zuckerberg testified to Sen. Ted Cruz that he considers Facebook to be a “neutral public platform” following a series of questions about the company’s recent efforts to crack down on conservative speakers under the guise of protecting the platform’s users from being exposed to “hate speech” and “fake news.”
Parscale has additionally asked why senators present at the hearing did not ask Zuckerberg how the Trump campaign and its supporters used the platform to promote him. The mainstream media attributed Trump’s popularity on social media to baseless conspiracy theories involving Russian hackers and social engineers.
Why doesn’t a Senator ask @facebook CEO about our campaign and how we used their platform? Oh wait, they all already know we did everything the right way, with zero collusion, no improper data, with great marketing from an awesome candidate. Yep…
As previously noted by The Guardian, Parscale, who served as Trump’s digital director in 2016, has gone on record to credit Trump’s influence on social media for helping him win the election.
