A 16-year-old Texas girl has been located after running away from home in January rather than enter into an arranged marriage set up by her parents.
According to the Bexar County Sheriff’s Office, the teen’s parents, father Abdulah Fahmi Kala Alhishmawi, 34, and mother, Hamdiyah Sabah Alhishmawi, 33, have been charge with abuse. Sheriff Javier Salazar says the young girl was subjected to having hot oil thrown on her, choked, and beaten with broomsticks by her parents after she resisted the arranged marriage with an adult man in which the parents were being paid around $20,000, reports USA Today.
The Taft High School student in San Antonio said the abuse only stopped once she agreed to the marriage, but rather than going through with it she walked out of school one day and disappeared.
The student was not returned to her parents when found and has been placed in child protective services, along with her five siblings age five to 15 years old.
“It’s highly likely” the adult man on the other side of the marriage arrangement will be facing charges as well, Salazar said, according to the San Antonio Express-News. The age of consent in Texas is 17.
The family is from Iraq and had been in the U.S. for two years on visas, but the type of visa is unknown at this time.
According to the Express-News, while the two suspects were being led away in handcuffs the father could be heard blaming the daughter for the situation and shouting at reporters.
