Earlier this week, Complex News’ Frazier Tharpe slandered MILO in a video about how the Alt-Right was intending to tank Black Panther user review score on Rotten Tomatoes.
Never let the truth get in the way of a spicy narrative.
A group called “Down With Disney’s Treatment of Franchises and its Fanboys” reportedly plotted to organize a barrage of negative reviews of the upcoming Marvel movie. The film has garnered massive amounts of controversy due to the mainstream media’s touting of it as a “diverse” (read: black-oriented) standalone property.
The same Facebook group, which has since been closed, claimed responsibility for Star Wars: The Last Jedi’s poor user ratings.
In response, Rotten Tomatoes announced that they would be monitoring the scores, stating to The Wrap that it would “not condone hate speech” and prevent users from posting racist comments on the website.
We at Rotten Tomatoes are proud to have become a platform for passionate fans to debate and discuss entertainment and we take that responsibility seriously. While we respect our fans’ diverse opinions, we do not condone hate speech. Our team of security, network and social experts continue to closely monitor our platforms and any users who engage in such activities will be blocked from our site and their comments removed as quickly as possible.
However, Comicbook.com reports that contrary to claims that Black Panther’s detractors are members of the Alt-Right, the group intending to sabotage the film’s score largely consist of DC Comics fans who are waging a war against Disney properties in response to the poor reviews garnered by Justice League.
It remains to be seen whether critical remarks about the movie will be removed as “hate speech” over claims made by the Facebook group.
Frazier Tharpe’s report for Complex News on the subject regurgitated claims that the Alt-Right was behind the effort, in a video titled “Alt-Right Losers Who Tanked ‘The Last Jedi’ Rotten Tomatoes Score Coming for ‘Black Panther’ Next.” He linked it to the poor reviews of the expensive 2016 dud, Ghostbusters, which was negatively reviewed by MILO—among many others who found the experience trite, unfunny, and uninspired.
During his report, Tharpe defamed MILO as a “noted pedophile”—a slanderous claim that neglects to mention the fact that he was in fact the victim of sexual abuse, and never a perpetrator.
Viewers questioned Tharpe’s slanderous claim within the YouTube comments section as well as on Facebook and Reddit, taking him to task for his remarks. The video received hundreds of dislikes as it peaked at almost 19,000 views.
Following a letter from MILO, Inc CEO and General Counsel, Alexander Macris, pointing out the libelous content, Complex has temporarily removed the video. The accompanying article (archive) on Complex.com has also been removed.
A senior counsel for Complex responded to Macris’s letter, stating, “We have received your communication and are reviewing the content in question. The video has been removed pending the investigation […] and we will communicate further within the next 24 hours.”
Macris’s initial letter to Complex stated,
Today, one of the editors of Complex posted a YouTube video in which he claims that our company’s Chief Creative Officer, Milo Yiannopoulos, is a “noted pedophile”. The video can be found here:As legal counsel for Complex, you must be aware that the falsely claiming that someone is a pedophile is libelous and disparaging. And the claim is false: Mr. Yiannopoulos is a victim of sexual abuse as a child. He is not, and has never been a pedophile. He has repeatedly and publicly denounced pedophilia and actively worked to expose pedophiles. Any claim that he is a pedophile is baseless, untrue, and malicious, and highly damaging to his reputation. We trust that you will see to it that this video is promptly taken down and a retraction issued to Mr. Yiannopoulos for this libel.
