Andrey Karlov, the assassinated Russian diplomat, has been given something of a tribute in the second episode of Telltale Games’ newest title, Batman: The Enemy Within.
The studio used a real-life image of his dead body superimposed over the image of a ransacked bank vault in one of the game’s scenes.
The diplomat and his assassin became an Internet meme in late 2016 after photographs of the shooting surfaced on social media. The assassin shouted “Allahu Akhbar” and “Don’t forget Aleppo. Don’t forget Syria!” before he shot the diplomat in the back.
The original, high-resolution photographs were almost too exploitable—perfect for photoshop manipulation thanks to the clear, white background and the gestures of Karlov’s assassin. Photoshopped pictures made their rounds on 4chan, Reddit and Twitter, and sublimated into public consciousness.
The event was widely reported in the news and the original photos, which were taken by Burhan Ozbilici, took the top prize at the 2017 World Press Photo contest.
In the game, Karlov’s likeness is portrayed by a security guard who’s implied dead amid the robbery of the Gotham Brokerage. The scene in question was first screencapped by BroTeamPill and later by numerous other YouTubers, who expressed their amusement on social media.

The image of Karlov’s body is identical, but the one in the game is slightly stretched due to the display.
Telltale Games develops numerous licensed games in the Walking Dead, Game of Thrones, and Minecraft franchises.
