Socialism is Having a Bad Hare Day – Venezuela Rations Rabbits

What’s up, doc?

“Let them eat rabbits” was the latest decree from Venezuela’s Minister of Urban Agriculture, Freddy Bernal. Maduro’s Venezuela has become one in a long line of socialist regimes which has failed to feed its people, and they are betting on rabbits, and the people’s cohoperation, to stem the growing famine and chaos. Failing to provide much else, they will now be issuing rabbits to select communities to breed as their primary source of protein.

Freddy said he hopes this will change the people’s “consumption patterns” away from chicken and beef, but the government failed to recognize that rabbits are much cuter than their bovine counterparts and, fur the time being, many have taken their government subsidy in as pets. With Venezuela’s laundry list of failed policies bringing the country to the brink of being a failed state, I’ve got a hutch this latest one would not turn out as Maduro is hopping.

The problems currently facing the Venezuelan people are significant and the fact that they have been reduced to breeding rabbits to eat is serious. Under Hugo Chavez, the Venezuelan government used its rich oil exports to finance his socialist policies. But, socialist policies are expensive, and a global abundance of oil, paired with Maduro’s ongoing mismanagement of the country’s economy as a whole, has driven the country into a humanitarian crisis, with some suggesting the potential for a full-blown civil war.

When basic necessities become luxuries, and breeding rabbits is the best solution the government can come up with to feed the country’s starving population, people get desperate. The resulting civil unrest, which has been ongoing for months now, has given Maduro an excuse to begin rounding up political opponents, and consolidating power with his allies within the executive branch.

As Maduro strips more and more democratic principles from the country’s legislative process, he continues to blame the country’s problems on American intervention in the country, a common tactic to rally a socialist support against capitalist imperialism. Of course, it doesn’t take a capitalist imperialist to know that depending on one single commodity to provide for the entire country’s economy is a bad plan, but some 90% of Venezuela’s money comes from oil exports, and oil prices are down. Perhaps Maduro is banking on the rabbit pelts market to pick back up. It wouldn’t be his worst idea.
