Richard Dawkins Event In Berkeley Canceled After Organizers Discover His Views On Islam

An event in Berkeley featuring Richard Dawkins has reportedly been canceled after organizers learned about his critical view of Islam.

According to Berkeleyside, the event in question was organized by progressive radio station KPFA.

Dawkins, a notorious atheist and harshly outspoken critic of all religions, was to appear on-stage and talk about his latest book ‘Science in the Soul: Collected Writings of a Passionate Rationalist.’

Berkeleyside reports that KPFA sang praises for Dawkins and the book – until a number of his anti-Islam tweets came to their attention.

Subsequently, the outlet states, the station sent an email to all ticket buyers that read, “we had booked this event based entirely on his excellent new book on science when we didn’t know he had offended and hurt – in his tweets and other comments on Islam, so many people.”

“KPFA does not endorse hurtful speech. While KPFA emphatically supports serious free speech, we do not support abusive speech. We apologize for not having had broader knowledge of Dawkins views much earlier.”

Putting the sheer insanity of the suggestion that one could know who Richard Dawkins is and not be aware of his hatred for Islam, it’s of course interesting that KPFA took offence with the author’s critique of Islam specifically.

Dawkins addressed that point in a statement.

“I am known as a frequent critic of Christianity and have never been de-platformed for that,” the statement reads. “Why do you give Islam a free pass? Why is it fine to criticize Christianity but not Islam?”

Listen to some of Richard Dawkins’ statements on Christianity below.

Dawkins’ statement goes on to call into question the notion that he has spoken about Islam in an “abusive” manner.

“You say I use ‘abusive speech’ about Islam,” it reads. “I would seriously – I mean it – like to hear what examples of my ‘abusive speech’ you had in mind. When you fail to discover any, I presume you will issue a public apology.”

While no one involved in the matter has mentioned exactly what tweets provoked KPFA, Berkeleyside reports, “a perusal of Dawkins’ recent tweets shows that he comments often about Islam, but he also comments about other religions.”

“Dawkins has sent out tweets and made statements that are critical of extremist Muslims, the female genital mutilation practiced by some Muslim societies, and the requirement that women must wear burkas.”

Apparently that’s “abusive” to progressives.

The sheer insanity of the matter has not been lost on the Twitterverse.

Pretty sure the Nazi’s are serious, does that mean their speech is protected? Does that mean that comedians don’t get free speech, because they’re not serious?

For a company in the communication business, they sure could use a few courses on communicating clearly. Somehow, though, I think their intent was to be as opaque as possible and just release a statement of babble, so that the only people who could be offended were the ones with intelligence and ethics.

No double standard. If you actually read The God Delusion you will see Christianity fares no better. I see in many of the comments here that that is overlooked as long as Islam is somehow picked out. Nearly all his arguments apply equally to all monotheistic delusions. As the politics here are all embracing ALL Republican values rather than a case by case issues I don’t suppose that will go down well. Chances are Dawkins has a position hated by Democrats and Republicans alike but loved by Independents.

            July 25, 2017 at 1:02 pm

Not every religion. Don’t lump us in with them.

Christianity demonstrably brought peace, for example in taming various tribes. The Vikings for example, were on a warpath constantly killing and raping, until their conversions to Christianity (i.e. Guthred) brought peace. All of the world’s most violent groups were pagans (Aztecs, Vikings, Mongols). Islam is just closer to pagan faiths in that it encourages domination, revenge-taking, and things that men generally want to do deep down when not discouraged by a Judeo-Christian conscience.

Do you really believe people obey the constructs of being “good” naturally? If we are just animals and there is no God, then there is no valid reason for us NOT to steal, rape, kill. Even if it’s simply for “Order”, then it would make sense for us to form tribes and crush the weak. Even slavery is perfectly logical within evolution: the weak serve the strong. It is only religious conscience that can oppose the concept.

Or even as a nation. If there is no God, then America as the world’s superpower, should conquer, colonize, and seize all the world’s resources (or carve it up together with a few other powers), to enrich it’s own people.

Compassion to the weak (i.e. weaker nations), is a Judeo-Christian concept, that has no place in Evolution: the strong take from the weak, the strong take several wives, the weak get none. Evolution demands the survival of the fittest, not welfare stealing from the strong to give to the weakest.

Well it’s a progressive radio show, what do you expect? You can’t keep screaming “free speech!” because they DON’T support free speech! Progressivism is the most open movement there is, they don’t hide their agenda. They are obviously about women superiority, black superiority and Islamism. They do not care about men, white people or any other religion. They especially don’t care about free speech because, despite how disgusting their speech is, nobody tries to stop them. So they have no reason to be fighting for free speech because their speech isn’t being suppressed.

    • G Fresh

      July 22, 2017 at 1:20 am

You said “They are obviously about women superiority, black superiority and
Islamism. They do not care about men, white people or any other
In my opinion, they’re general about EQUALITY. So, NOT “women superiority” or “black superiority”.
It’s also my opinion that they’re generally for the freedom of religion or freedom from religion. So… equality for Christians, Atheists, Muslims, etc.
NOT for the superiority of Muslims.
They generally don’t want religious beliefs forced on people so…. they wouldn’t want Muslim beliefs forced on people either.
Just because they’re not for SOME BRANCHES of Christianity forced on people, does not mean they’re against Christianity or for Islam.
As for the free speech thing. It’s a radio station, a business. They are listener funded so…. they have a right to decide what to do as far as that goes.
If this was the government making a decision, it would be a totally different story.
It’s a business so they have a choice as far as what they’ll air and such.
Is FOX “news” against free speech because they don’t let left wingers get up and talk on their for half the time?

Business decision? Umm, correct me if I’m wrong, and I’m certain you will TRY, but I’m thinking, baker, gay wedding…..”They have a RIGHT to decide what to do”? Is that what you think?

The progressive movement is not about equality. They are about superiority. They assign VICTIM and PERP tags on the world at large and the VICTIMS “need” the progressives to speak for them, stand up for them. This action by KPFA is yet another proof. Anti-Christian, anti-Jewish is fine, anti-Islam is not permitted.

I don’t watch Fox News, dear. One of the reasons is the shouting that results when the panels full of “left-wingers” disagree on any topic. Fox works at balanced, but at uncomfortable decibels for me. Julie Roginsky, Alan Combs, Bob Beckel(he left, but was replaced by Juan Williams). But I don’t watch it any longer, so I’m sure you can find a more current and complete list.

You’ve listed a few untruths and a few half baked ideas. Study up, why don’t you, and come back when you have learned more about the world.

      • AlexCorvidae

        July 22, 2017 at 6:52 pm

You are entitled to your opinion and the freedom to express it. However it is my opinion that you are misinformed, simply not paying attention, intentionally obtuse, or delusional. Feminism (in it’s current form) is about regret = rape, manspreading, and #KillAllMen or #KillAllWhiteMen. Please explain how that is generally about equality and not superiority? BLM seeks segregated dorms, shouts “What do we want? Dead cops. When do we want them? Now!”, blames racism for all their problems, and white people men in particular are all racist bigots, refuses to acknowledge that they are in fact a racist group, it is possible to be racist against whites, hell it’s encouraged and applauded. How is that about equality and not superiority or special privileged status. And then there is Islam. Linda Sarsour a “feminist” muslim woman called for a jihad against the President and our government speaking at a muslim event. They enforce archaic laws from their religion to be brutal to many of the groups that the progressives support such as homosexuals, and women. Which you think would make them the natural enemy of progressivism, an old outdated religion that preaches the blessed nature of killing infidels (pronounced innocents). But for whatever reason they defend Islam at every turn. There were recently a number of european incidents where someone in a van ran over innocent people. In the cases where it was a muslim who did the killing no one progressive would speak up against the religion. In the one case where is was a white person, that news was pushed to the forefront. A christian bakery refused to make a wedding cake for a homosexual couple and they got sued, muslims throw homosexuals off of rooftops and progressives say nothing. A doctor performs female genital mutilation in accordance with muslim culture, and nothing. How is that equality? I personally am all for equality for everyone. However, in order to be equal all these little groups need to realize they aren’t fucking special, just as everyone else isn’t special, they need to realize and accept that when they hear speech they don’t like, they can walk away. You can have a restaurant staffed by all latinos, all blacks, all asians. One staffed by only white people is discriminatory and racist. As for the radio station, it is their prerogative to cancel interviews and choose who they give airtime and an audience to. However in this instance, they didn’t research the personality and opinions of someone they sought an interview with before hand, and given the nature of the speaker and their choice to cancel his interview exposes a glaring hypocrisy.

This is what liberals don’t seem to understand. None of the conservatives posting here want to prohibit KPFA from controlling their scheduling or want the government to force KPFA to broadcast a certain number of hours per week of conservative dogma that KPFA people hate. They just want to criticize KPFA for refraining from criticizing Moslems who mutilate women’s bodies, fornicate with children, or throw gay men off buildings to watch them go splat on the pavement.
By contrast, many liberals want to force conservatives to do things they don’t want to do. A good example is Senator Feinstein’s proposed “fairness doctrine” a number of years ago, which would have forced conservative outlets to broadcast a prescribed percentage of liberal dogmas that were already being broadcast on CNN, MSNBC, NBC, CBS, NPR, and PBA. Feinstein eventually abandoned it, but from time to time other liberals talk about reviving it. There has been less of that talk since Trump got elected . . .

        • G Fresh

          July 23, 2017 at 12:39 am

More Christians in the world perform female genital mutilation than Muslims do. Between the combination of Catholics and various Christian groups. Most of this OUTSIDE of the U.S., of course. I’d post a reference but I’ve heard it’s not o.k. to post links here.
A lot of “Christians” still promote killing homosexuals too. Check out the Uganda anti homosexuality act. They originally were going to kill homosexuals but then changed it to life in prison. Christian country. U.S. “Christians” helped promote the law. Someone submitted a bill in California to kill all homosexuals recently too. A Christian. So… it’s not as if it’s only Muslims and some Christians don’t take part in that mentality as well.
For the record, I’m not for killing homosexuals.
I’m not sure if Australia still has it but they recently had a fairness doctrine. Not sure my opinion on it. Seems interesting having been told about it by some Australians. It’s different anyway.
I was trying to point out that this event was a radio station event put on at a church NOT a university event.
I guess I’m not supposed to post link but.. there is a Mother Jones article on female genital mutilation that’s called ”

Female Genital Mutilation Is Not a Uniquely Muslim Problem”. It has statistics on religions that practice it and it’s most Christian and Catholic. I think their stats are from UNICEF but not positive.

          • G Fresh

            July 23, 2017 at 12:42 am

I think part of the reason there isn’t imprisonment and killing of homosexuals in the U.S. is because the U.S. is a secular country. If it was a Christian government, then who knows what would happen.
As I said, Uganda had a law to kill homosexuals and it’s a Christian law and country. Catholic and Christian dominated country.

True, I find that many stupid people think that they are intellectual HA???? .here let me give you a little help … Here is Dr, Dawkins comparing feminist with Islam.

      “Dear Muslima

Stop whining, will you. Yes, yes, I know you had your genitals mutilated with a razor blade, and … yawn … don’t tell me yet again, I know you aren’t allowed to drive a car, and you can’t leave the house without a male relative, and your husband is allowed to beat you, and you’ll be stoned to death if you commit adultery. But stop whining, will you. Think of the suffering your poor American sisters have to put up with.

Only this week I heard of one, she calls herself Skep”chick”, and do you know what happened to her? A man in a hotel elevator invited her back to his room for coffee. I am not exaggerating. He really did. He invited her back to his room for coffee. Of course she said no, and of course he didn’t lay a finger on her, but even so …

KPFA is a radio station so their decision may be more of a business decision than a decision to stifle free speech.
They are funded by their listeners so they probably don’t want to offend too many of them so they can continue to get their funding.
I’m not sure if this comment will be approved as they seem to only approve comments that go along with their articles.
This is a business decision. It seems reasonable for a business to do what is in their best interest, as long as it’s not unethical.

If you all think that Fox news should let left wingers have their complete say for at least half the time on Fox “news”, then you can continue to talk.
This is about a radio station that is listener funded.
If you think they shouldn’t stop this event, you must also think Fox “news” should allow a bunch of left wingers on their to talk a lot of the time, to not prevent, “free speech”.

Fox does have liberals on their network. Juan williams, shep smith just off the top of my head. How many conservatives does this radio station employ?

    • AlexCorvidae

      July 22, 2017 at 9:16 pm

Hell of a false equivalence you paint there. How does one interview at a radio station equate to half of all the content at Fox News? Also they agreed to/sought out an interview with this individual, and then canceled it. If Fox News sought out an interview with an individual and then canceled it based upon a double standard I would also call out their hypocrisy. People that are interested in hearing Mr. Dawkins or at the university level any Right leaning speaker, as well as those few who disagree with such views but believe in free speech are rightly calling out the hypocrisy of the reasoning of the canceling the interview. Nobody said that the station isn’t free to make those decisions. And respectfully, I can continue to talk whether you agree with me or not, as can you. I will not be silenced. I am so disgusted with all the mental midgets who do nothing but spew vitriol, silence opposition, and are incapable of examining a challenging thought or idea or point of view.

It’s not an interview at a radio station. It was a speaking engagement at a church.
The point is, if one is going to say a listener funded radio station should put on an event that may offend it’s listeners, you may as well say Fox “news” should put on things THEY don’t want to. It’s the same thing.

        • AlexCorvidae

          July 23, 2017 at 1:02 am

Thank you for correcting me on the nature of the engagement. I’m not saying that the radio station should put on the event. I’m questioning why Mr. Dawkins views about Islam are untenable and worthy of cancellation. When his equally negative views about Christianity were fine.

      • G Fresh

        July 23, 2017 at 12:09 am

You said “News sought out an interview with an individual and then canceled it
based upon a double standard I would also call out their hypocrisy.”
Fox “news”… is… a… business. It’s within their rights to not air a segment or have a guest if that’s what they want to do. Please don’t act as if they’re unbiased.
I’m sure they don’t intentionally have guests or segments that will hurt their business and / or ratings.

        • AlexCorvidae

          July 23, 2017 at 12:58 am

Where did I ever speak about an absence of bias for Fox News? Also what’s the deal about Fox News that you mention it so much? You could say the things you are saying about CNN, MSNBC, Huffington Post, Vox, the Washington Post, Breitbart. Your comments still wouldn’t fit your point, but the comparison would still be equally “valid”. Nobody is arguing that the radio station is violating free speech, or at least I’m not. I’m aware that freedom of speech is primarily to do with the governments attempts to stifle speech, and that freedom of speech is not freedom to a platform to speak from. Again the point I’m concerned with is the deplatforming of a speaker for reasons that are hypocritical. In particular expressing negative views about Islam. Which is something that is happening with increasing frequency. This is another example, but it isn’t at all the only one.

      • G Fresh

        July 23, 2017 at 12:15 am

such views but believe in free speech are rightly calling out the
hypocrisy of the reasoning of the canceling the interview.”
Once again. I don’t think a lot of people complain that Fox is stifling free speech by not having a ton of people on their that don’t fit with their programming.
This is a listener funded radio station so… cancelling an event that may harm the amount of funding they get is not unreasonable. Especially when they don’t make nearly as much as Fox “news” does.
If this was something the GOVERNMENT was doing, then the “free speech” thing would be more of an issue.
If a lot of people want to see him speak, someone else can probably book him and host him somewhere.

This is simply fear. They are afraid of what Muslims will say and worse do if offended. This is not motivated to prevent islamaphobia. These are timid people protecting themselves not other timid people. These people are cowards- This is how free speech dies, at the hands of cowards.

Dr. Dawkins, and his wife, took part in the free speech movement at Berkeley University 1960s when he was a visiting professor, which got free speech in all American universities. And now and here this happens to him. What a way for such a great man to face the coming to an end of his life… Full circle. ????

I’m not sure you’re factually correct, though I agree with the sentiment. If I understand it correctly, he has been de-platformed by a radio station, not a university, which partly takes the edge off your point, as a private US radio station can presumably broadcast whatever the directors like.

Speaking from the UK, I find it unpleasant that UK universities tend to de-platform a speaker, often under pressure from the students, if the speaker is dissenting from the campus culture of the day, which at present is left-of-centre. I hear even more alarming anecdotes of speakers at US universities being even more aggressively deplatformed, even on the basis of tweets, or remarks they made decades previously. Even with the internet now available, the SJWs must be consuming megagooglehours dredging up these historical comments, and then painting the banners, texting the disruptive plans, and haranguing the spineless university authorities into de-platforming speakers on “security grounds”.

The most vociferous and effective opponents of free speech today are the very people who claim to be supporting it.

I love those who picks the nits. Ha! I will give your that Berkeley University and a Berkeley radio station are not the something, nevertheless, perhaps I could be forgiving for talking about Berkeley as a whole, inasmuch as, the protest were for a time forced off campus into the city of Berkeley. With that said, you did make some good points.

The modern left seems to have a real ideological problem with freedom, either from struggling to understand the concept or actually being against it (although few would admit the latter). The freedom to say innocuous things without content, that address no significant issue, that no one can disagree with (and thereby feel offended), is no freedom at all.

Classical liberalism – Voltaire, Tom Paine, J. S. Mill etc – science, logic and reason, skepticism, free speech.

Postmodern left “liberalism” – Foucault, Derrida, the Frankfurt School of Marxism – cultural relativism, the cult of victimhood, free speech as long as you agree with what’s being said, hereditary and collective guilt, anti-science (it’s a tool of white male domination).

    • Today’s “Liberals” are just fascists/socialists/communists that have appropriated the label “Liberal” because they need to hide their true nature.
That’s why they also label themselves “Progressives”.

When in reality….CTRL-LEFT is really the appropriate label. They want to control what people say, do and think.

Dawkins is an angry, bitter man. His polemics against religion are well known even as he refuses to debate others on the issue who may present any significant challenge to him.

However, he shouldn’t be de-platformed or censored at all. Let people who wish to see him join his audience or not. I wouldn’t spend the time or money to see him, but I’d never think to deny my neighbor the opportunity to go.
